After cover stints on Adventure Time and Bravest Warriors, we put him to the test with the tricky mixed-media art style of The Amazing World of Gumball and he just crushed it. Now, we’re excited to be working with him on his first original series, a coming-of-age story with a cool fantasy airship twist that fans of Tank Girl, Rocket Girl, or Miyazaki’s Howl’s Moving Castle are sure to enjoy!

This Week’s Comic News: come prepared with one or two recent news items that catch your eye for the group to discuss.

Luc Besson Adapts French Graphic Novel for Space Opera, Time Travel Film:
(themarysue.com 04/13/2015)

Luc Besson, director of recent sci-fi blockbuster Lucy and cult classic The Fifth Element, announced on Twitter that his next project is yet another sci-fi epic, this time an adaptation of the French graphic novel, Valérian and Laureline.

The project is called “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” and it will adapt the graphic novel by writer Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mézières.

Besson also announced that the film would begin Shooting in December 2015 for a theatrical release sometime in 2017, and that the lead roles would be played by Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne. Both actors should be familiar to fans with DeHaan having played Harry Osborn in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Delevingne is set to tackle Enchantress in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie.

There’s been over 21 volumes of the series and UK publisher Cinebook is currently publishing English language editions of Valérian at a rate of one volume every six months. Volume 10, titled Brooklyn Line Terminus Cosmos, is scheduled for publication in September 2015.
———————————————————————————————————
First published in 1967 Valerian follows the two title characters, who are a “Time/Space agent” and his super intelligent companion who is originally from 11th century France. The comic is a contemporary of the Dr. Who TV series and shares many similar themes. It’s also credited with influencing many sci-fi classics including Star Wars, The Fifth Element, and Avatar.

Valérian, is a French science fiction comics series, created by writer Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mézières. First published in Pilote magazine in 1967, the final installment was published in 2010. All of the Valérian stories have been collected in graphic novel album format, comprising some twenty-one volumes plus a short story collection and an encyclopaedia. Valérian is one of the top five biggest selling Franco-Belgian comics titles of its publisher, Dargaud.[1]

The series focuses on the adventures of the dark-haired Valérian, a spatio-temporal agent, and his redheaded female companion, Laureline, as they travel the universe through space and time. Valérian is a classical hero, kind-hearted, strong and brave who follows the orders of his superiors even if he feels, deep down, that it is the wrong thing to do. On the other hand, his companion Laureline combines her superior intelligence, determination and independence with sex-appeal, making her one of science fiction’s most notable heroines. Influenced by classic literary science fiction, the series mixes space opera with time travel plots. Christin’s scripts are noted for their humour, complexity and strongly humanist and left-wing liberal political ideas while Mézières’ art is characterised by its vivid depictions of the alien worlds and species Valérian and Laureline encounter on their adventures. The series was a landmark in European comics and pop culture, and influenced other media as well – traces of its concepts, storylines and designs can be found on sci-fi films such as Star Wars, The Fifth Element, and Avatar.

UK publisher Cinebook is currently publishing English language editions of Valérian at a rate of one volume every six months.[51] The following volumes have been released so far:

– The City of Shifting Waters – July 2010
– The Empire of a Thousand Planets – July 2011
– The Land Without Stars – April 2012
– Welcome to Alflolol – September 2012
– Birds of the Master – March 2013
– Ambassador of the Shadows – November 2013
– On the False Earth – March 2014
– Heroes of the Equinox – September 2014
– Châtelet Station, Destination Cassiopeia – March 2015

The next volume, Brooklyn Line, Terminus Cosmos is scheduled for publication in September 2015.

Comics Uniting Nations -Kickstarter
The United Nations is diving into the wonderful world of comic books for a new Kickstarter project called Comics Uniting Nations.

Comics Uniting Nations is a charitable endeavor led by an educational non-profit group called Reading With Pictures, whose goal is to provide comics for free, worldwide, under a Creative Commons license to promote the United Nations’ new resolution on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)!

In September, the United Nations is set to ratify a “to-do list” of 17 Sustainable Development Goals to serve as a roadmap toward a better tomorrow for the entire world.

These goals address wide-ranging issues such as; sustainable energy, extreme poverty, health, education, gender equality, drinkable water, economic growth, and several others.

The point of using comic books in this project is to spread the word about these goals to the entire world in a language that everyone can understand. The language of narrative art.

The goal is to create 17 separate comics that each address one of the SDG’s using wordless storytelling.

The reason they are using kickstarter is because pursuing institutional grant funding moves too slowly for them meet their September release deadline, and because they’re partnering with established comic creators who they wish to pay for their services.

Here are the initial four stories:

1) Goal 4: QUALITY EDUCATION
Writer: Yen Yen Woo (Dim Sum Warriors)
Artist: Lars Jakobsen (Ganske Vist)

New list of comic books I bought this week month. With the Comics.Community podcast meeting every two weeks, sometimes I forget to pick up my pull lists on time.

-All-New Captain America: Fear Him #1 & 2 (Marvel)
Writer: Hopeless, Dennis
Artist: Kudranski, Szymon
Cover Artist: Bianchi, Simone
A hungry villain has returned to feed on the city’s fear.
-Cluster #1 (BOOM!)
Writer: Brisson, Ed
Artist: Couceiro, Damian
Cover Artist: Stokoe, James
WHY WE LOVE IT: Ed Brisson (Sheltered) is one of comics’ best new voices and we could not wait to work with him on an original series following his run on Sons of Anarchy. After hearing his pitch for a gritty, violent, sci-fi epic in the vein of The Dirty Dozen, we knew there was no one better to bring the criminal cast of characters to life than the other half of the Sons of Anarchy team and Ed’s Murder Book collaborator, Damian Couceiro. WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT: Cluster is a series for fans of old-school, hard-boiled action. Brisson and Couceiro know how to tell stories about rich characters with criminal backgrounds, and the off-world setting allows them to tell personal stories with a massive scope. Have you ever wondered what a book starring all those lowlifes in the gutters of sci-fi havens like Mos Eisley would look like? Then we have the book for you. WHAT IT’S ABOUT: In the distant future, as mankind discovers life on other planets, it needs soldiers to defend its colonies and outposts across the stars. In order to increase the number of boots on the ground, criminals are offered the opportunity to serve in the place of incarceration. But as wars wage on and more soldiers are needed, small-time crimes are given long-term punishments. When a group of prisoners serving their time as soldiers become stranded and abandoned on a war-torn planet, they’ll need to work together to survive and uncover the truth behind Earth’s role in deep space.
-Star Wars #1 (Marvel)
Writer: Aaron, Jason
Artist: Cassaday, John
Cover Artist: Cassaday, John
THE GREATEST SPACE ADVENTURE OF ALL TIME CONTINUES!
* The Rebel assault on Cymoon 1 continues!
* Luke Skywalker – cornered by Darth Vader!
* Han, Leia, and the others – trapped!
-Darth Vader #1 (Marvel)

Now, follow Vader straight from the ending of A NEW HOPE (and the pages of the new STAR WARS comic book) into his own series, showing the Empire’s war with the Rebel Alliance from the other side! Writer Kieron Gillen (Uncanny X-Men, Journey Into Mystery, Iron Man) and artist Salvador Larroca (Invincible Iron Man, X-Men: No More Humans) bring us a peek behind the mask of evil!
-Daomu HC (Magnetic Press)
Writer: Xu, Kennedy
Artist: Chou, Ken
Cover Artist: Chou, Ken
Daomu follows young Sean and his initiation into a secret society of international tomb robbers, where he learns about the true legacy of his dysfunctional family: protecting ancient underworlds that are hidden beneath our feet. Along with a ragtag band of marauders, Sean must survive the terrors of the deep, solve his father’s brutal murder, and ultimately claim his birthright as leader of the Daomu. But forces are hell bent on stopping him!
-Thor #5 (Marvel)
Writer: Aaron, Jason
Artist: Molina, Jorge
Cover Artist: Dauterman, Russell
* The mysterious all-new Thor has taken Midgard by storm. But if her enemies have their say, her reign as the Goddess of Thunder will be a short one.
* Prince Odinson is making a list and checking it twice.
* All-Father Odin is so desperate to see Mjolnir returned to Asgard that he will call on some very dangerous, very unexpected allies.
* And the Absorbing Man and Titania are just up to their usual tricks. Namely, robbing banks and crushing anyone who dares get in their way.
-Wilds End #6 (BOOM!)
Writer: Abnett, Dan
Artist: Culbard, I. N. J.
Cover Artist: Culbard, I. N. J.
Not everyone who set out to uncover the truth behind the aliens creating havoc in Lower Crowchurch has survived the journey. Those that remain now put their lives on the line in a lastditch effort to save their town in this stunning conclusion to the hit series.

Graphic Details 10-24-2014

Warning! Here there be Spoilers!

Below are my full and detailed thoughts and reviews of various graphic novels and trades that I’ve read. Reading this is a good way for you to get caught up on what’s going on in comic books today, but it also contains major spoilers for some of today’s most popular books. So, don’t say I didn’t warn you that Graphic Details begins, now!

Doomboy HC (Magnetic Press)
Writer: Sandoval, Tony (Illustrator)
Artist: Sandoval, Tony
Cover Artist: Sandoval, Tony

Graphic novel originally published in French (2011). This is the first English printing. The translation is really good, in part because the themes of the story are very universal, but also because the art is so endearing.

I want to talk about the art and the book itself, because the production values on the book are gorgeous. We talked last week on the Comics.Community podcast about the fact that some people like physical books better than digital, and this is a prime example of how having a high quality book in your hands can make reading more pleasurable.

The gorgeous book compliments the wonderful art which is somewhat cartoonish but still very relatable, and in some places very powerful.

Examples: When ID first learns about his girlfriend there’s a great use of blank white space to show his isolation and pain. Then, when he’s on the beach and he hears the sound of “the other side” on a radio, there’s a beautiful page of SKY SQUIDS! And finally, there’s a gorgeous splash page near the end of the book of Doomboy unleashing all his pent up feelings into one perfect chord as energy just explodes from his guitar.

Doomboy is a heartfelt story about love and loneliness, with a bit of mysticism thrown in to serve as a metaphor for things that people feel but can’t quite describe.

It’s about a young man named ID, who learns that his girlfriend has died. This seems very sad, and it is, but the story glosses over some of what ID is feeling and moves along with showing other parts of his life, so the reader doesn’t really have time to be sad. To me, the story moving along without dwelling on the sadness reflects how the main character also moves along without really dealing with his grief.

This is when the mysticism comes in and ID learns that he suddenly has a hole in his chest where his heart used to be. And that the hole gets bigger if he talks about her. Very much a metaphor for what happens when someone in your life dies, it feels like they’ve taken a piece of you with them into the afterlife.

I don’t want to give away the whole story, but, In order to deal with the hole in his chest and his inability to talk about his lost girlfriend, ID decides to pour everything he has into a heavy metal guitar project that he calls Doom Metal. He also adopts the name of Doom Boy, which was a nickname his girlfriend gave to him.

Eventually, this very personal music gets accidentally re-broadcast to the entire city by ID’s best friend. The music really touches people and inspires them. IDs music also becomes so powerful that it actually reaches his girlfriend in the afterlife, and through the music he’s able to fill the hole in his chest.

So, the story is very symbolic and mystical, but also very relatable and very human all at the same time. It’s definitely the most emotionally gripping stories I’ve read in a long time and I couldn’t recommend it highly enough.
