Luc Besson Adapts French Graphic Novel for Space Opera, Time Travel Film:
(themarysue.com 04/13/2015)

Luc Besson, director of recent sci-fi blockbuster Lucy and cult classic The Fifth Element, announced on Twitter that his next project is yet another sci-fi epic, this time an adaptation of the French graphic novel, Valérian and Laureline.

The project is called “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” and it will adapt the graphic novel by writer Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mézières.

Besson also announced that the film would begin Shooting in December 2015 for a theatrical release sometime in 2017, and that the lead roles would be played by Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne. Both actors should be familiar to fans with DeHaan having played Harry Osborn in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Delevingne is set to tackle Enchantress in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie.

There’s been over 21 volumes of the series and UK publisher Cinebook is currently publishing English language editions of Valérian at a rate of one volume every six months. Volume 10, titled Brooklyn Line Terminus Cosmos, is scheduled for publication in September 2015.
First published in 1967 Valerian follows the two title characters, who are a “Time/Space agent” and his super intelligent companion who is originally from 11th century France. The comic is a contemporary of the Dr. Who TV series and shares many similar themes. It’s also credited with influencing many sci-fi classics including Star Wars, The Fifth Element, and Avatar.

Valérian, is a French science fiction comics series, created by writer Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mézières. First published in Pilote magazine in 1967, the final installment was published in 2010. All of the Valérian stories have been collected in graphic novel album format, comprising some twenty-one volumes plus a short story collection and an encyclopaedia. Valérian is one of the top five biggest selling Franco-Belgian comics titles of its publisher, Dargaud.[1]

The series focuses on the adventures of the dark-haired Valérian, a spatio-temporal agent, and his redheaded female companion, Laureline, as they travel the universe through space and time. Valérian is a classical hero, kind-hearted, strong and brave who follows the orders of his superiors even if he feels, deep down, that it is the wrong thing to do. On the other hand, his companion Laureline combines her superior intelligence, determination and independence with sex-appeal, making her one of science fiction’s most notable heroines. Influenced by classic literary science fiction, the series mixes space opera with time travel plots. Christin’s scripts are noted for their humour, complexity and strongly humanist and left-wing liberal political ideas while Mézières’ art is characterised by its vivid depictions of the alien worlds and species Valérian and Laureline encounter on their adventures. The series was a landmark in European comics and pop culture, and influenced other media as well – traces of its concepts, storylines and designs can be found on sci-fi films such as Star Wars, The Fifth Element, and Avatar.

UK publisher Cinebook is currently publishing English language editions of Valérian at a rate of one volume every six months.[51] The following volumes have been released so far:

– The City of Shifting Waters – July 2010
– The Empire of a Thousand Planets – July 2011
– The Land Without Stars – April 2012
– Welcome to Alflolol – September 2012

– Ambassador of the Shadows – November 2013
– On the False Earth – March 2014
– Heroes of the Equinox – September 2014

The next volume, Brooklyn Line, Terminus Cosmos is scheduled for publication in September 2015.

Comics Uniting Nations -Kickstarter
The United Nations is diving into the wonderful world of comic books for a new Kickstarter project called Comics Uniting Nations.

Comics Uniting Nations is a charitable endeavor led by an educational non-profit group called Reading With Pictures, whose goal is to provide comics for free, worldwide, under a Creative Commons license to promote the United Nations’ new resolution on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)!

In September, the United Nations is set to ratify a “to-do list” of 17 Sustainable Development Goals to serve as a roadmap toward a better tomorrow for the entire world.

These goals address wide-ranging issues such as; sustainable energy, extreme poverty, health, education, gender equality, drinkable water, economic growth, and several others.

The point of using comic books in this project is to spread the word about these goals to the entire world in a language that everyone can understand. The language of narrative art.

The goal is to create 17 separate comics that each address one of the SDG’s using wordless storytelling.

The reason they are using kickstarter is because pursuing institutional grant funding moves too slowly for them meet their September release deadline, and because they’re partnering with established comic creators who they wish to pay for their services.
