Graphic Details 10-10-2014

Warning! Here there be Spoilers!

Below are my full and detailed thoughts and reviews of various graphic novels and trades that I’ve read. Reading this is a good way for you to get caught up on what’s going on in comic books today, but it also contains major spoilers for some of today’s most popular books. So, don’t say I didn’t warn you that Graphic Details begins, now!

Avengers, Vol. 3: Prelude to Infinity (Marvel Now)
Writer: Hickman, Jonathan
Artist: Deodato, Mike
Cover Artist: Yu, Leinil Francis

Infinity? Really? As in, Infinite Crisis? Marvel is encroaching on DC territory here with this upcoming event that centers on the destruction of the universe and realities colliding.

I’m wondering how much this event has to do with the old X-Men being brought into the future and the apparent dismantling of the Ultimate Universe? Not to mention the whole Original Sin thing and the forthcoming Spider-verse event. Basically, Marvel is bending their collective reality like they haven’t done since the Beyonder white jump suited his way into the 616 with “Secret Wars”.

In the back of my mind I’m wondering whether this event is just a chance to reboot the Marvel Universe more thoroughly than what Marvel Now did, or if it’s all just a convoluted scheme to get Miles Morales into the 616?  I think about these things, people!

Anyway, Prelude to Infinity is supposedly the buildup to “the biggest cosmic event of all!” But so far we just have Hyperion doing a bad Superman impersonation and Thor trying to be a real God by educating the transformed Savage Land children as he would a child of Asgard, by telling them stories of The Warriors Three and having them chase magical rocks. Great job Thor. Also, Captain Universe is there to confuse everyone, and Hawkeye & Spider-Woman are walking around in swimwear getting a tan. What on earth is going on here?

Ok, let’s back up before we go any further.

But when the High Evolutionary stakes his claim on the Children of the Sun, Hyperion learns the true cost of the decisions he’s made – and the techno-titan Terminus returns! Then, the prelude to Infinity begins as all of Earth’s Origin Sites go active – and the planet begins communicating with something much more ancient than humans. And when alien races fleeing an intergalactic terror crash to Earth, Captain Universe and Manifold must take a trip across the universe. But whatever happened to Ex Nihilo, Abyss, Starbrand and Nightmask? As the Avengers recruit more members to deal with the mounting threat, the Builders enter the Marvel Universe – and INFINITY is upon us. Collecting AVENGERS (2012) #12-17.
